Citizens Mobilize, and Private Water Bottler Drops Plan in Ulster County

Local citizens in Ulster County came together to question Kingston’s plan to sell water to a for-profit water company, and as a result, Niagara Bottling has dropped the project.

“A significant potential threat to our public water resources has been averted by this decision as the result of a huge amount of community engagement and advocacy in Kingston and Woodstock and beyond,” said Riverkeeper’s Kate Hudson.

“We now have the opportunity to look forward and advocate for sustainable water management policies in Ulster County and the Hudson Valley that will keep public water resources in the hands of the public. Riverkeeper will certainly remain involved in that very important effort.”

Riverkeeper supported groups including the Woodstock Land Conservancy and Kingston Citizens in pressing for a thorough environmental review of the project. See this earlier post.
