Holding the Federal Government Accountable

Since the launch of our Indian Point Campaign, Riverkeeper has held the the federal government's feet to the proverbial fire with regard to safety, security, and emergency planning issues. Below is a sampling of the comments and actions we've taken over the last few years.

  • Riverkeeper submitted formal comments in August 2005 to the NRC in support of Westchester County's petition for rulemaking that would require the NRC to change criteria currently used in the relicensing process.


  • Riverkeeper, Union of Concerned Scientists and others petitioned the NRC in January 2006 to address the growing radioactive leaks at U.S. nuclear plants across the country.


  • Riverkeeper and GRACE filed formal comments in January 2006 with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in response to the Committee to Bridge the Gap’s petition for rulemaking which calls for enhanced security regulations at our nation’s nuclear power plants.


  • Riverkeeper put Entergy and EPA on notice regarding Radioactive Leaks at Indian Point in April 2006.


  • Riverkeeper submitted formal comments to Federal Aviation Administration regarding proposals to increase air traffic over Indian Point in June 2006.


  • Riverkeeper submitted formal comments to the NRC regarding proposed changes to the emergency planning regulations in October 2006.


  • Riverkeeper submitted formal comments to the NRC regarding proposed changes to the Design Basis Threat for nuclear power plants.


  • Riverkeeper submitted formal comments to the NRC that would require that all host school pick-up centers be located at a minimum distance of five to ten miles beyond the radiation plume exposure boundary zone to ensure that all school children are protected in the event of a radiological emergency.
