Riverkeeper's Campaign Against Another 20 Years
In December 2003 the Westchester County Board of Legislators passed a resolution opposing the 20-year re-licensing of Indian Point 2 & 3. Riverkeeper is asking citizens to bring the template resolution resolution to their local town/village board.
Indian Point 2 and 3 are currently licensed to operate for 40 years. Their 40-year licenses will expire 2013 and 2015, respectively. Entergy announced that it will submit its re-licensing applications in March 2007.
Indian Point is neither safe nor secure and remains vulnerable to a terrorist attack. As the facility continues to age, Indian Point will experience an increasing number of equipment failures. The consequences of a radioactive release from Indian Point – whether triggered by a terrorist attack or accident – pose serious risks to the region’s residents, environment and economy.
The NRC acknowledges that it is highly unlikely that Indian Point would ever again be sited so close to New York City, the nation’s largest population and financial center. It therefore begs the question why the same NRC would see fit to extend the operating license of this problem-plagued facility for another 20 years.
