The Independent Safety Assessment at Indian Point (H.R.994/S.649) bill addresses safety problems and emergency planning for the Indian Point nuclear reactor. The bill requires the NRC to conduct an Independent Safety Assessment of vital systems at Indian Point and requires the NRC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide an explanation detailing the facts they relied upon in approving Indian Point’s emergency plans, despite the findings of the 2003 Witt Report which concluded that the plans are inadequate to protect people from an “unacceptable dose of radiation.”
UPDATE
Since being introduced on February 12, 2007, H.R. 994 has remained in the House of Representatives' Committee on Energy and Commerce and Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality. Likewise, S. 649 has remained in the Senate's Committee on Environment and Public Works since its introduction in the Senate on February 15, 2007.
Riverkeeper strongly supports passage of The Indian Point Independent Safety Assessment legislation and will urge our Congressional delegation to work toward swift passage of both bills.
