Newburgh: Manufactured Gas Plant Site Brownfield Remediation

On April 28, 2005, Riverkeeper – along with Scenic Hudson and Clearwater – submitted comments to the NYS DEC on the proposed brownfield remediation project at the waterfront site of the former manufactured Gas Plant in Newburgh. While it is important to remediate contaminated waterfront sites such as this one, the current proposal does not adequately ensure that contamination remaining in the ground will not seep into hte Hudson in future years. The proposal would also “cap” the Hudson River bottom, creating an impermeable surface useless to the river’s aquatic life.
