A company has proposed building a 178-mile double-barrel pipeline connecting Albany to Linden, N.J., along the New York State Thruway and Interstate 287 corridors. Its backers say one line would carry crude oil south, and another would carry refined petroleum products north. However, both could be used to pump crude oil. Riverkeeper argues that this pipeline would not reduce crude oil train, barge or tanker traffic in the Hudson Valley, as the pipeline backers say, but instead would simply add another leg to the “virtual pipeline” that industry has made through the valley without any comprehensive review of environmental impacts.
