Riverkeeper Questions DEC’s Rush to Permit at NYC Council Hearing on Hydrofracking

On September 22, 2011, Riverkeeper testified at the New York City Council Committee on Environmental Protection’s public hearing on hydraulic fracturing (“hydrofracking”). Chief among the concerns we expressed to the Council is that DEC continues to rush the regulatory process, seriously limiting the public’s opportunity to have their concerns about hydrofracking actually influence DEC’s decision-making. We also called out DEC for moving ahead with hydrofracking, while admitting that it does not have the necessary staff in place to adequately regulate this activity.
