OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERARiverkeeper is proud to share with you the following big wins, all of which occurred in just the last three weeks!

How does Riverkeeper cover so many bases in such a short time? The support we get from folks like you allowed us to grow our staff and have a fighting chance to keep up with the all the rapidly-growing challenges facing our magnificent river and precious drinking water supplies.
So, our thanks go out to all who donated this year, AND those of you who will step up in the coming weeks to help us keep fighting – and winning!

Here’s the rundown on our big November wins:

  • The NYS Public Service Commission shelved a controversial plan to desalinate Hudson River water to feed sprawl in Rockland County, lauding Riverkeeper and our partners in the Rockland Water Coalition, and calling for a new, more sustainable county water supply/conservation plan.
  • Riverkeeper and others documented dangerous deterioration at railroad bridges along the Hudson River, over which massive amounts of volatile crude oil are shipped each day. Astonishingly, over 100 schools are located within the one mile blast-radius of these train lines and so we’re fighting for safer rules and alerting the public about the risks.
  • Under pressure from Riverkeeper and our fellow advocates, the folks at Global Partners. withdrew their potentially-disastrous plan to process tar sands crude oil in New Windsor. We are in court to challenge a similar plan for Global’s facility in Albany.
  • Riverkeeper sued to block the State’s much-maligned attempt to use clean water funding to help pay for the Tappan Zee Bridge. A prominent state watchdog agency just found serious improprieties with the process; EPA has ruled that 95% of the loan doesn’t meet legal standards.
  • We joined over two dozen green groups to fight the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s failure to deal with the nation’s growing spent nuclear fuel problem. More on this case, here.
  • Riverkeeper sued to challenge the State’s failure to require environmental review before allowing the Danskammer power plant in Newburgh to resume operation, a completely illegal act that even State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman bluntly criticized.
  • Riverkeeper helped local advocates assure that a proposed bottled water plant in Ulster County will get full environmental review and not simply be given a rushed through, rubber-stamp approval.
  • Finally, Riverkeeper extended watchdog boat patrols to never before reached points on the Mohawk River – the Hudson’s largest tributary.

That’s the news for now. Have a great thanksgiving – and know how thankful we are, for your support!
