Brian and colleagues at UMass Amherst along with collaborators at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve have been assessing the likely impact on the Hudson River from sediment releases from future dam removals. As part of this work, the research team estimated the total amount of sediment detained behind dams throughout the Hudson River valley, and compared this amount to the total sediment budget of the Hudson River. The team also evaluated the sediment needs of tidal wetlands in the estuary to gauge the benefit from releasing dam-impounded sediment downstream. Brian and his team members’ work is nearly complete and has concluded that the total amount of dam-impounded sediment is small relative to the watershed sediment supply.

Please join this webinar to hear first-hand about the methods, findings, and implications of this work. The focus of this study is fascinating, and the implications for dam removal policy are significant. The Study was funded by NOAA and the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center.

RSVP by registering in advance. This presentation is part of Hudson River Watershed Alliance’s 2019-20 breakfast speaker season.
