Join Climate Reality NYC Metro Chapter for this panel event discussing sea level rise, erosion, resilience and the health of our waterways and shores that surround us.

New York City is a City of Bridges: the Brooklyn Bridge, Triboro, Tappan-Zee. Before the bridges, however, were the rivers–the great Hudson River, the East River, the Bronx River, and the many inlets and estuaries that served as the arteries that connected these land masses we call home. Their rich biodiversity was testament to the health of these arterial waterways.

New York Harbor was once home to hundreds of millions of oysters. Whales, dolphins, seals and otters once frolicked in the waters of the Hudson and East River, and Sandy Hook, New Jersey, was once populated with innumerable red cedar and eastern holly trees, that protected the shoreline from erosion.

With the depletion of New York’s natural protectors, our city and region are ever more vulnerable to sea level rise and erosion. How did we get here, and what can we do to prevent further degradation of our historically and ecologically important waterways? Join our panel discussion as we learn about the exciting people and organizations that are working tirelessly to shore up the health of our waterways, and our city.

Panelists include Paul Gallay, of Riverkeeper, Pete Malinowski, of the Billion Oyster Project, Dr. Nicole Davi, of the Lahmont-Doherty Earth Observatory, And Christian Murphy, of the Bronx River Alliance.
