The Wallkill River Watershed Alliance is hosting the 1st annual Wallkill River Festival on Saturday, October 7, with a rain date of Sunday, October 8. This free festival will run from 2:00-6:30 pm on the Wallkill River, at the New Paltz Gardens For Nutrition, 51 Huguenot Street.

The festival is a time for the community to come together to celebrate the river and to gain inspiration for how we can work together to restore it as an ecological and recreational resource. The festival will open at 2 pm with a blessing of the river by Turtle Clan Vincent Mann of the Ramapough Lunaape Nation. Three local bands will provide entertainment on the hour, starting with The Wild Swan Band at 3 pm, New Paltz Rock’s Ashes of the Phoenix at 4 pm, and Yard Sale at 5 pm.

Other features at the festival will include:

  •  A silent auction of watershed landscape paintings by local artists
  • Raffles of goods and services donated by  local businesses
  • Food provided by Gomen Kudasi and Jamaican Choice Caribbean Cuisine
  • Hands-on activities for kids and information about watershed conservation will be provided by many local organizations, including:
    • Live stream critters with the Mohonk Preserve Streamwatch Program
    • Fun activities about reducing river pollution with Mad Science of the Mid-Hudson
    • Riparian tree walk with the Wallkill Valley Land Trust
    • Information on the latest results on the state of the river from the Wallkill Alliance Science Working Group and Riverkeeper
    • Conservation practices for farmers and landowners from Ulster County Soil & Water Conservation District
    • Fish-eating advisories from the NYS Dept. of Health’
    • Environmental conservation info from New Paltz Climate Action Coalition
    • Gardiner Environmental Conservation Commission
    • The Coalition Against Pilgrim Pipeline (CAPP)
    • kid’s activities with New Paltz Karate and face painting with the Bruderhof Community.
