The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will host a meeting in Tarrytown to receive public comment on its proposed rule extending the storage of spent nuclear fuel at more than 100 locations around the U.S., including the Indian Point nuclear reactors in Westchester County.

The public can comment on the NRC’s draft environmental impact statement, which it prepared after a successful federal court challenge to its “waste confidence rule” by Riverkeeper and our allies. The decision came down in June 2012.

The proposed rule and environmental study, collectively known as “waste confidence,” are scheduled to be published Sept. 13. Publication will initiate a 75-day public comment period, through November 27. The Tarrytown meeting is one of 12 around the country.

The proposed rule was developed to replace a provision in NRC’s environmental regulations that was updated in 2010 but struck down last year by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Following the court ruling, the Commission directed the staff to develop a new rule and a generic environmental impact statement on the extended storage of spent fuel beyond a reactor’s licensed life.

An open house begins at 6 p.m., followed by the meeting from 7-10 p.m.

The NRC requests attendees register ahead of time by email ([email protected]) or phone (301-287-9392). Please send your name, affiliation or organization if appropriate, location of the meeting that you would like to attend, and requests for accessibility accommodations if necessary. Also, please note if you would like to present oral comments. Registration will be confirmed by email.
