RESCHEDULED: Arguments on Factory Farms in NY Supreme Court

When:
May 16, 2014: 10:00AM to 11:00AM
Where:
Rensselaer County Courthouse, 80 Second Street Troy, NY 12180 map

Riverkeeper and Earthjustice will be in New York State Supreme Court on Friday, May 2, challenging New York State’s proposed deregulation of medium-sized factory dairy farms known as consolidated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs. (The originally published date was April 4, rescheduled once for May 2–and now set for May 16.)

The public is encourage to attend as observers. We urge interested members of the public to attend to show their concern about the deregulation of dairies in New York. There will be no opportunity for the public to speak and courtroom decorum must be respected.

The Department of Environmental Conservation’s rulemaking has rolled back clean water protection standards to allow medium size dairy CAFOs to operate without a permit, in clear violation of both federal and state law, with the likely result that untreated cow manure will run-off into and contaminate nearby waters. For more background on the issue, please see our July 2013 blog post announcing the lawsuit.

Directions to the courthouse:

If you are driving, take exit 8 off 787 North (Watervliet, Green Island) and go over the Green Island bridge. Take a right at the traffic light at the end of the bridge (going past the Dinosaur BBQ restaurant). Proceed onto Third Street and then take a right at Congress and Third. The courthouse is at the southeast corner of Congress and Second Streets.
