Riverkeeper’s Jeremy Cherson will lead a teach-in on Crude Oil Transport in the Hudson Valley- Local Threats and Activism.

With very little public awareness and no study of environmental impacts, the oil industry has made the Hudson Valley into one arm of a dangerous “virtual pipeline” for crude oil that snakes thousands of miles by rail, barge and ship from oil fields in North Dakota, Canada and elsewhere, to refineries on both coasts. Up to 7 billion gallons of crude oil moves through the Hudson Valley each year via the existing “virtual pipeline.” In addition to Bakken crude oil, the industry is seeking to turn New York into a tar sands transport hub. A proposal has been made by Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings, LLC for two “real” parallel pipelines each up to 24 inches in diameter that would run from Albany, NY to Linden, NJ. One pipeline would transport crude oil south while the other pipeline would carry refined products north. In total, the pipeline would cover some 178 miles, crossing Albany, Greene, Ulster, Orange, and Rockland counties. Join this workshop for a crash course on the dangers of crude oil transport in NYS and how communities and advocates across NYS and NJ are fighting back to protect our region and the planet.

Free and open to the public. Donations welcome at the door. Refreshments served.

350NYC invites you to a day of videos, workshops, speakers, and art action-planning, to cap off this important week when Pope Francis will be speaking to the U.S. Congress and the United Nations about climate, poverty and the future of the planet.

We come together to learn what we can do to get OFF fossil fuels and ON to clean renewable energy NOW!

This is a climate teach-in for everyone!

Play your part in growing the Climate Movement. Join us to demonstrate your resolve to restore environmental sanity to the world in the lead up to the Global Climate Treaty Negotiations in Paris in December. Learn what you can do to make a difference.
