Sampling the Rondout Creek

At the invitation of the Rochester Environmental Conservation Commission, Riverkeeper will present information about citizen science monitoring of water quality in the Rondout Creek as part of Ulster County Creek Week.

Bring a pizza topping and enjoy fresh pizza from an outdoor wood-fired oven, local craft beer, music and information about the Rondout Creek Watershed, and what we can do about it.

Riverkeeper is working with citizen scientists in several tributaries as an extension of our ongoing Hudson River water quality monitoring project. Monthly samples from May through October are tested for the fecal-indicating bacteria, Enterococcus, recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency for assessing recreational water quality. The project on the Rondout began in 2012, and all data is available at riverkeeper.org/water-quality/citizen-data.

The Rondout-Wallkill watershed is the largest tributary to the tidal Hudson River. The portion of the Rondout watershed from its headwaters in the Catskill Mountains to the Rondout Reservoir is part of New York City’s drinking water supply. Riverkeeper’s citizen sampling partners test for Enterococcus at 17 locations downstream of the reservoir. In the Rochester area, testing sites includes several popular swimming holes.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
