The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is hosting a public meeting about the safety of Indian Point on May 14, and we need your help to send it a loud message: Don’t Let it Happen Here!

In the wake of the Fukushima disaster, the NRC promised it would “learn the lessons” of the accident and reexamine regulations and procedures at US nuclear plants with a view toward preventing similar ones here. More than two years later, area residents remain acutely concerned that little or nothing has changed to improve public safety regarding Indian Point.

Join Riverkeeper and our partner groups in calling the NRC to account for its failure to address the real safety issues at Indian Point – evacuation planning, dangerous storage of nuclear waste and other critical issues that are not being addressed in relicensing but demand attention.

Come out and join us in voicing your concerns. Don’t let the NRC continue to rubber stamp the assessment of this old and dangerous nuclear power plant in our backyards.

Open House (Westchester Ballroom Reception), 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Public Meeting (Westchester Ballroom), 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Suggested Questions for the NRC

  • Why did NRC fail to order the shutdown of Indian Point despite region wide closure of bridges, roads and mass transit during Superstorm Sandy?
  • How many exemptions from safety rules has Indian Point been granted in the last 10 years?
  • Why are evacuation and emergency response plans not included in the Indian Point relicensing process?
