The Schoharie Valley – Exploring the History, Agriculture, and Restoration

The Hudson River Environmental Society will host an ecotour of the Schoharie River Valley on September 30, 2016. The tour will visit a post-Irene stream restoration work site on Little Schoharie Creek with Peter Nichols of the Schoharie Soil and Water Conservation District. Participants will also visit the Schoharie Old Stone Fort where Revolutionary War reenactor Kyle Jenks and the staff of the Old Stone Fort will discuss Palatine and Revolutionary War history. At noon participants will have lunch at the Carrot Barn where NYS Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets Richard Ball will discuss agriculture in the Schoharie and Mohawk Valley. Lastly, the tour will visit the Schoharie River Center where high school age kids use macroinvertebrates to assess water quality, participate in archaeology, and collect folk lore.

Participants will meet at the Schoharie Park and Ride located just south of I-88 on Route 30A (see map and address) at 8 AM, and will board a 28 passenger chartered coach.

Important Information:

1. Space is VERY limited (28 participants only) so register early to ensure your participation!
2. Registration fee includes: bus fee, entrance fee to the Old Stone Fort and lunch at the Carrot Barn. All participants should bring drinking water and snacks.
3. The event is geared for older students (high school and college level) and adults.
4. The event will occur rain or shine so please dress for the weather as we will be spending a fair amount of time outdoors. All participants should bring: water, snacks, appropriate clothing for the weather, and comfortable footwear for walking on uneven terrain.
5. Restroom available on chartered coach.
6. Please be prompt! Arrive at the Park and Ride no later than 8:00 AM. The bus will depart as soon as everyone registered arrives but no later than 8:30 AM in order to stay on schedule.
