Jonathan Spanier


Jon Spanier, PhD, is President of the Dextra Baldwin McGonagle Foundation. Under his leadership, the McGonagle Foundation has been an active advocate for water quality protection, land conservation and scientific research at the undergraduate level. Jon’s undergraduate degree is from Cornell University and his Ph.D was awarded by the University of Minnesota. His research areas include medical microbiology and the biology of parasites and other microorganisms. Jon’s wife Jennifer also has a doctorate – but in biology. His son, Ben, who interned for Riverkeeper in 2013, is a student at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. His daughter, Abigail, is currently a student at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. Jon is an experienced volunteer firefighter, having been a member of the Pound Ridge and Vista, NY fire departments. He now serves with the Corinth, Vermont VFD.
