MSNBC video: Riverkeeper boat captain is the ‘Batman of the Hudson’

Riverkeeper’s patrol boat Captain John Lipscomb is featured in this mini-documentary from Awen Films for MSNBC. The film crew rode along with us along during patrols of New York City’s Gowanus Canal and Newtown Creek as John described his work. “It’s become a real mission. It’s not a job. It’s a life.”

“Whenever we see cormorants, or we see egret or we see heron, it’s a really hopeful sign, and it’s a message from the natural world, saying, ‘We’re waiting. You do the right thing, and we’ll come back.'”

“Our goal now is to try to have this wonderful city lead the world, as it does in many ways, as an example of how a city of 8 or 9 million people can live next door to the water, and the water can be healthy and the city can be healthy. I think that has to be possible.”
