The Riverkeeper Sweep will return in 2013 with our second annual day of service for the Hudson River on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

In 2012, we helped 450 volunteers remove seven tons of trash from 30 river communities, and plant hundreds of trees. This year, we know we can do more – and indeed, that we have to do more, since Superstorm Sandy has left us with so much to do. Whether it’s trash cleanups, shoreline tree-planting and stabilization or restoration of public docks, we will help inspire the volunteers necessary to meet the challenge.

We are happy to kick off the 2013 Riverkeeper Sweep with three new partners, all of which will be organizing events on May 11: The Great Saw Mill River Cleanup, the Empire Dragon Boat Team’s Flushing Bay Shoreline Cleanup and Keep Rockland Beautiful cleanups.

There are three main ways you can help.

ORGANIZE A CLEANUP OR OTHER SERVICE PROJECT
Consider organizing a cleanup in your community. Riverkeeper relies on local volunteers to organize cleanups—with our support and assistance in the new year. So please take a look at the needs in your community, talk to your organization or your friends, and plan to organize a project. Contact Dan Shapley and Dana Gulley at [email protected] for information.

SPONSOR THE SWEEP
For businesses, we have sponsorship opportunities ranging from $500 to $5,000. It’s a great cause, and it takes considerable effort to organize. We’d love to have your help. Please contact Dan Shapley at 914-478-4501 x226 or [email protected] for more information.

VOLUNTEER
For those of you who would like to get involved as volunteers, rather than organizers or sponsors, fantastic! We need you. Stay tuned, and in the coming months we’ll connect willing volunteers to the sites that need attention. In the meantime, please email [email protected] to join our Sweep mailing list.
