On Trump’s choice for EPA: We will not we will not let anyone roll back the progress we’ve made

scott_pruitt_16502619990Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt’s resume is littered with efforts to scrap and weaken 50 years of our nation’s clean air and water laws.

Needless to say, it was bad news Wednesday when the public learned of his selection by Donald Trump to head the EPA.

This isn’t just bad for the environment, safe drinking water, healthy air, and clean water with abundant life.

This is bad for business. Businesses want an EPA that can do its job and not be ideologically rigid.

This is bad for people. An overwhelming majority of Americans support efforts to protect drinking water, clean air and clean water in our rivers, lakes and coastlines.

This is bad for New Yorkers. New York has come too far since the days of treating our waterways like an open sewer and landfill. We are not going back. Riverkeeper will not let anyone threaten our Hudson River or New York’s drinking water.

Our work continues its course, powered by tens of thousands of grassroots volunteers working in their communities up and down the river to protect and restore the environment.

We’ve stood up to the oil industry before, and we will again.

We’ve stood up against government inaction, and we will again.

On Newtown Creek, for example, on the border of Brooklyn and Queens, we took on ExxonMobil, the biggest petroleum corporation on earth. The cleanup of that decades-old oil spill is under way.

And in the Hudson Valley, for example, we’re pushing back against plans to ship dangerous and dirty tar sands oil down the Hudson; against plans to move crude oil and other petroleum products by pipeline down the NY Thruway, and against the use of a high-pressure fracked gas pipeline next to an aging and leaky Nuclear Plant– Indian Point. Ordinary people are making a difference. We see it again and again. See what Riverkeeper and our grassroots allies have accomplished just in 2016.

The Senate should reject this nomination. The public must call and write their Senators imploring them to make no compromises on clean air and clean water by rejecting Scott Pruitt as EPA Administrator. We have come too far to go back.
