What killed the Flushing Bay whale? [Video]

[ABC Video]

While we don’t know what killed the minke whale found dead today near LaGuardia Airport, we know water quality in Flushing Bay and Flushing Creek can be deadly to wildlife.

The Bay and Creek can and should be inspiring assets to the community and little engines of life for the estuary and ocean – as they were before we started dumping millions of gallons of sewage there.

If we want whales — alive — we need to dramatically reduce sewage overflows that starve the system of life-giving oxygen.

We cannot allow the city, as proposed, to treat just one or two symptoms of those overflows, by removing stinking sediment and dumping chlorine to kill some bacteria.
