Wallkill River: Signs of Progress

Advocates for the Wallkill River achieved a milestone at the 2019 Wallkill River Summit, when the Department of Environmental Conservation announced it would develop a clean water plan to reduce excess nutrients from wastewater treatment plants. This is an important step toward cleaning up the river, and particularly will help reduce the risk of Harmful Algal Blooms, such as the one that plagued the river in 2016.

Riverkeeper has been working in the Wallkill River Watershed since 2012. The Wallkill River Watershed Alliance formed four years ago this month, in June 2015. Here’s a look at some of the other progress we and other partners have made in this large tributary of the Hudson River.
