The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have announced that they plan to restrict which water bodies are protected from pollution and destruction under the Clean Water Act. The proposed rule drastically limits the type of wetlands protected under federal safeguards, leaving them vulnerable to pollution and destruction. The “Polluted Water Rule” would weaken the Clean Water Act and hand corporate polluters a license to damage waterways throughout New York and across the country. New York currently has nearly 2 million acres of wetlands, but under the proposed rule only around 140,000 acres would remain protected.
