This September, Waterkeeper Alliance held its global conference in Quito, Ecuador, bringing together Waterkeepers from around the world to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and advance the global movement to protect clean water. In Ecuador I was joined by Riverkeeper teammates Dan Shapley, Krista Birenkrant, and Sebastian Pillitteri. We started our adventure with an immersive “Thinking with Rivers”-themed expedition which took us from Quito, into the cloud forest, across the Andes, and into the Amazon River basin. Over four days our group of 14 Waterkeepers visited and swam in five different waterways within the tributary system of the Amazon River. We listened to bird songs, babbling streams, Andean music, and the stories of the Indigenous residents doing the daily work of stewarding forests, mountains, and rivers within the world's largest rainforest and river system. When we joined the 125 Waterkeeper groups in Quito, we were primed and ready for the work of exchanging ideas, listening to others’ methods of restoring waterways, and sharing what we have learned doing this work on the Hudson. As one of the founders of the Waterkeeper Alliance, Hudson Riverkeeper has a special role in the movement. Ecuador was a fitting location for this year‘s conference because it is the first country to enshrine the Rights of Nature in its constitution. The Rights of Nature global movement provides a framework for protecting the natural world by acknowledging that human beings are a part of nature, not above or separate, and that the natural world is made up of non-human lifeforms that have inherent rights that should be protected by our laws in the same way human rights are protected. While the Rights of Nature movement aligns with the values of Indigenous communities who have proven to be our most effective stewards of nature, we also heard from local partners about the ongoing work and mixed successes that have followed. During the conference our team participated as presenters and partners in sessions on harmful PFAS “forever chemicals,” drinking water, sewage and stormwater pollution, citizen science, and strategies for supporting our organizations and building our movement. The highlight of the trip was participating in a “minga” on the San Pedro River, led jointly by the Guayllabamba Waterkeeper and Colectivo Rescate Rio San Pedro. For this traditional day of communal service, Waterkeepers joined local volunteers in cleaning debris from the river, removing invasive plants, creating art from recyclable materials, and observing the region's rich biodiversity. The day concluded with a shared “pambamesa” — a community meal — followed by a water ceremony in which participants offered flower petals to the river as blessings from our home waters. Our hosts told the story about a 6-year-old girl, whose prayer at their first “minga” wished for the health of the river, the health of all rivers that flow into it, for the sea – and all rivers around the world that reach the sea.
