Holtec, which owns Indian Point, has been cited multiple times for breaking rules related to how it stores spent nuclear fuel. Despite the repetitive nature of Holtec’s noncompliance, the NRC said the violations did not pose a significant safety risk, and let Holtec off the hook once the company came back into compliance. We also continue to monitor the use of the Decommissioning Trust Fund — the pot of money funded in part by New York ratepayers that Holtec is using to shut down and clean up the site — to ensure an accountable, thorough decommissioning process that keeps New Yorkers, water, and wildlife at its center. None of the information shared at the DOB meeting gave any indication that Holtec is taking steps toward pursuing a “restart” of Indian Point. On the contrary, the company continues to dismantle the nuclear reactors and is prioritizing decommissioning a separate part of the Indian Point site.
