Riverkeeper statement on Indian Point site development

Riverkeeper Team
Riverkeeper was surprised that Holtec announced plans to develop the Indian Point site into a data center along the shore of the Hudson River with energy sources potentially including a small nuclear reactor.
“Holtec has failed at one of its most critical tasks at Indian Point: identifying and containing radioactive contamination. The groundwater at Indian Point remains polluted with radioactive materials, yet Holtec has no plans to clean up or prevent the spread of these harmful pollutants including strontium, cesium, and tritium,” says Riverkeeper President and Hudson Riverkeeper Tracy Brown. “Just last year, Holtec discovered previously unknown radioactive cesium in the soil at part of the site. Holtec’s inaction presents ongoing risks to the Hudson River and is an insurmountable barrier to any redevelopment aspirations they may have.”
Riverkeeper looks forward to soliciting more details on Holtec's proposed plan and to robust public comment at the next Decommissioning Oversight Board meeting on September 25.
