Sewage in the Hudson: Support our Program

August 17, 2011

Riverkeeper Team
Riverkeeper’s new report proves it: the fight for safe swimming, fishing and boating on the Hudson is at a turning point.
Since 2006, Riverkeeper’s been testing water quality in 75 different locations, up and down the Hudson River. According to our new report, "How Is the Water?" shoreline areas along the Hudson, where families go to swim and fish more and more each year, fail federal safety standards a whopping one in every four days. And, even more frequently after rainstorms!
On August 9th, Riverkeeper held a press conference to announce these findings and say what needed to be said: it’s shameful that our water quality isn’t better than this. We know that you aren’t satisfied with a Hudson that fails safety standards three times as often as the national average for beach locations, and neither are we.

Believe it or not, Riverkeeper’s expose of water quality problems on the Hudson is getting serious attention and meaningful change is already starting to happen. At our press conference, state legislators Adriano Espaillat and Thomas Abinanti pledged to introduce legislation requiring better public notification about water contamination. New York City officials soon agreed to share their own sampling results with the public immediately [instead of a year later, as they do now].
Now that we’ve exposed the disturbing truth about widespread contamination in the Hudson, we need your support if we are to win the fight for a cleaner, healthier river that you, your friends and your family can all enjoy safely!
Donate to Riverkeeperand we can keep sampling on the Hudson and expand into adjacent rivers and streams. Only Riverkeeper tests the water from one end of the Hudson to the other. If we don’t keep doing it, nobody will.
Support Riverkeeperand we’ll keep our officials’ feet to the fire until the Hudson is truly swimmable, fishable and boatable. Our governments need to test more and invest more, for clean water!
  • Please, make a special gift today to support our Water Quality Testing Program—the only one of its kind for the Hudson River. Without it, we simply cannot provide you and your family with the information you need to help you swim, boat and fish safely. Nor can we keep the pressure on government to take the necessary steps to make our rivers cleaner.
  • Forward this note to a friend Ask him or her to help Riverkeeper to continue to be the first line of defense for the Hudson River. It's our river and it's our job to protect it. Let's get the job done together.
Whether testing water quality or responding to the two major sewage spills the Hudson suffered in recent weeks, Riverkeeper is the recognized leader in the fight for a pollution-free Hudson -- the “Water Quality Mavens” as a recent New York Times profile put it.
Make a difference for cleaner water in your community. Please Make A Gift Today!
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
Sincerely,
