Several studies, including a 2017 report by Synapse Energy Economics and an updated 2018 prediction of demand by the New York grid operator, show reduced demand for electricity due to energy efficiency. New renewable capacity and energy efficiency will maintain grid reliability, with more than sufficient available power. New York can and should reduce the amount of fossil fuel it uses for electricity generation by truly going big on energy efficiency, renewables, and storage.
