OSSINING, NY — Riverkeeper issues this statement from its President, Paul Gallay, in response to President Donald Trump’s plan to scrap carbon emissions regulations from fossil-fuel burning electricity plants — particularly those that burn coal:

“The President’s decision to strip the Clean Power Plan is a huge step in the wrong direction for our environment. Global warming is an indisputable fact based on peer-reviewed science. Fortunately, New York has clean energy initiatives in place which can take the state to 50 percent renewables by 2030. However, air pollutants and carbon emissions know no state or national boundaries, and Trump is sacrificing the Earth’s future for fossil-fuel industry profits, leaving next generations to pay the price.

“The President’s actions will not be nearly as effective in creating jobs as investing in growing the clean energy sector that is already outpacing fossil fuels. Some 125,000 people in New York are employed in the clean energy economy, which benefited from 800% growth in solar from 2011 to 2016.”
