RIVERKEEPER RELEASES FIFTH GAS DRILLING REPORTER
Details Environmental Impacts of Gas Drilling From Around the Country
White Plains, NY – November 5, 2009 -- Today Riverkeeper released the fifth volume of its Industrial Gas Drilling Reporter. The Reporter collects impact stories of industrial gas drilling from across the country, provides an update on the State environmental review, links to recent reports, and educates the public on ways to take action.
Since the summer of 2008 Riverkeeper has tracked the prospect of industrial gas drilling in New York State. While gas drilling in New York is not new, what is new is the magnitude, scope, and location of horizontal drilling using high-volume hydraulic fracturing. Indeed, industrial gas drilling throughout the Marcellus Shale and other shale reserves in New York has the potential to impact the environment and communities dramatically.
“Our goal is to educate our members and the general public about what has happened elsewhere and what may happen here in New York,” said James L. Simpson, Riverkeeper Staff Attorney. “We want to help the public make informed decisions during the public participation component of New York’s draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement.”
Among many other things, Volume Five covers New York State’s recent decision to extend the public comment period, reports on water pollution in Pennsylvania, air pollution in Texas, flammable tap water, and details how the public can participate in the review of the State’s draft environmental impact statement.
