The Cost of Closing Indian Point: Under $15

It is a day for the history books. Today in public hearings in Tarrytown, Riverkeeper begins making our arguments before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that the Indian Point nuclear reactors should be shut down when their original 40-year operating licenses expire. Entergy is seeking a new license to operate them for another 20 years. Starting with arguments about the danger of corroded pipes at the aging facility, Riverkeeper and our allies will argue an unprecedented number of issues.

Outside the hearings, Riverkeeper continues to make the case that we can replace Indian Point’s power. Thanks to a study we released Friday, we now know that the cost of replacing Indian Point’s power is just $12- $15 for the average residential consumer – per year. That’s only about $1 per month!

Co-commissioned with the Natural Resources Defense Council and conducted by the respected energy consultants Synapse Energy Economics, the study details specific, achievable, cost-effective alternatives to Indian Point.

The facts are on our side.

We won the right to argue an unprecedented number of contentions before the NRC, making this the most complex relicensing it has ever undertaken.

We won in federal court in June, forcing the NRC to deal with the looming risk of storing 1,500 tons of highly radioactive waste in unsecured buildings on the banks of the Hudson River.

We will win in state hearings, where we are arguing that Indian Point’s slaughter of 1.2 billion fish and other river organisms annually, along with its radioactive leaks, make its use of Hudson River water illegal. If we prevail, the plant will be denied the water permit it needs to operate.
