Akila Simon migrated from Trinidad & Tobago, pursued her studies in Accounting at Adelphi University, is a former financial services auditor at Deloitte, and currently works for UNICEF at the United Nations supporting the financial portfolios of the Child & Community Health, Public Health in Emergencies, and Health in Emergencies global initiatives.
Akila is President of the Board and a founding member of Guardians of Flushing Bay, a grassroots coalition of human-powered boaters, environmental enthusiasts, and community members advocating for a healthy and equitably accessible Flushing Bay. She is a certified dragon boat paddling coach with over 13 years of experience and is currently one of the coaches of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Employee Wellness Dragon Boat program “MSK”, as well as Vice President of The Beasts Inc. — an affiliate program to MSK — and former head coach of the Empire Dragon Boat Cancer Survivor Team in NYC. All of these teams practice regularly in Flushing’s waterways.
Akila, the Guardians, and their numerous environmental partner organizations/stewards continue to work to empower local communities, focusing on the remediation and restoration of Flushing’s waterways while also advocating for environmental equity.
