Avery Gilbert

Avery Gilbert is a partner at Engage Strategies, which provides integrated services in strategic planning, policy analysis, and management to nonprofits, associations, companies and philanthropies. Avery has twenty years of experience in strategic advocacy, including state and federal policy advocacy as well as social justice and impact litigation. At the Center for a Sustainable Economy, in Washington DC, she worked on energy policy at the state and federal level with a particular focus on dialogue between labor and environmental groups. She also analyzed the energy savings impacts of President Clinton’s Climate Change Tax Incentives and advocated for their passage. While at the Beldon Fund, Avery advanced the Fund’s mission to create political power through strategic state-based advocacy and alliances between health and environmental communities.

Avery sharpened her elbows at Boies, Schiller & Flexner, LLP, a top litigation firm in New York, litigating complex commercial disputes involving a wide range of antitrust, contract, intellectual property and tort claims. She has since built an impact litigation practice to reduce mass incarceration. She also worked with the United States Senate Judiciary Committee and with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, where she helped craft a multi-state greenhouse gas litigation strategy.

Avery holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law and a B.A. from Skidmore College. She currently lives on the Hudson River in Rhinecliff, NY, and formerly served as board chair of the Rhinecliff Library.
