In response to the July 3 major sewage discharge from the Yonkers wastewater treatment plant that shut down access to the Hudson River, Riverkeeper sent a team of our scientists out to sample the river in the vicinity of the spill. Despite the County's lack of communications about reopening river access, our sampling and that of our partners found that the fecal bacteria levels were low enough for swimming and recreating to resume several days before the County tested the water again on July 13. Riverkeeper is calling on Westchester County to provide daily monitoring after a major sewage release and notify the public as soon as conditions have improved.
