Public invited to ‘Visioning Workshop’ on future of Newtown Creek

WHAT: Members of the public are invited to join community organizations, agencies and environmental groups for a Newtown Creek Community Visioning Workshop.

Newtown Creek is a 3.8-mile waterway border between Brooklyn and Queens, a federally designated Superfund site with a long history of industrial pollution and environmental neglect. Each year, billions of gallons of raw sewage flow into the creek.
This is a key time to develop a unifying vision for the creek, and to share knowledge and tools to shape that vision.
To that end, Riverkeeper and Newtown Creek Alliance are leading a three-hour session June 3 where community members, planners, public officials and other stakeholders will share their thoughts about the creek’s remediation, restoration, recreation, and resilience. Participants will receive information and updates about efforts including the Long Term Control Plan to reduce sewage pollution and the Superfund project to clean up the decades-old spill of oil from historic refineries and storage facilities into soil and groundwater in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Experts from around the creek and from organizations like SWIM Coalition, Waterfront Alliance, Billion Oyster Project, LaGuardia Community College and Evergreen business exchange will guide community members through issues, scenarios and possibilities for the creek and its shoreline. Work stations and images brought to life by the architecture and design firm Perkins + Will will provide participants with tools to develop and design a vision of Newtown Creek. Ultimately the document will help foster efforts toward a healthier and more resilient ecosystem for the years to come.
