Working with Mayor Mamdani to protect New Yorkers from flooding

Riverkeeper applauds Mayor Mamdani and the administration for showing a strong commitment to tackling the climate crisis in the FY27 Executive Budget. The administration is making a meaningful investment in flood resiliency, committing $10.6 million to fully staff the Bureau of Coastal Resiliency and $95 million to expand the Cloudburst program to respond to coastal flooding and extreme rainfall. At the same time, last week the city announced Mayoral support in Albany for Riverkeeper’s top legislative priority, the Rain Ready NY Act, a bill that would drive reductions in stormwater runoff and promote green infrastructure (plantings that absorb stormwater) citywide. Taken together, these moves send a clear message that this administration shares Riverkeeper’s commitment to protect all New Yorkers from future storms.
Riverkeeper is pleased to see funding for the FiDi Coastal Resiliency Plan and investments in a city climate adaptation plan for 2027. As the final budget takes shape, we will continue to work with Mayor Mamdani, Speaker Menin, and the City Council to ensure that these priorities and funding for critical water infrastructure are included in the final FY27 budget.
