The principals and lobbyists at Pilgrim Pipeline, LLC are finding that grassroots opposition can be a formidable opponent. A groundswell of opposition in New York and New Jersey; city and village veto power in New York; and a flawed business plan due to a lack of a customer base. Ares Management, a primary investor in the proposed Pilgrim pipelines should be worried by the findings in a new report from Unite Here, “Is Ares Management Building a Pipeline to Nowhere?”
They have good reason to worry.
Just last week, the City of Rensselaer, a municipality with veto authority under the TransCorp law unanimously passed a resolution in opposition to the proposed pipelines. In June, the Town of Rosendale and the Village of New Paltz have both passed resolutions asking the New York State Comptroller to divest pension fund investments from Ares Management because of their investment in the proposed pipelines.
The report acknowledges the ongoing challenges Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings, LLC faces and that, “These problems show no sign of abating. Not only has Pilgrim failed to overcome the growing opposition to its use of land along the pipeline’s route, but it now faces additional potential legislative and regulatory hurdles.”
