At the Movies: Louisiana Stories

Please join us for the New York premiers of two documentaries: Indian Santa (2012, 9 min.) by directors David Lee and Rex New, and My Louisiana Love (2012, 64 min.) by director Sharon Linezo Hong at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Following the screenings will be a discussion with My Louisiana Love director Sharon Linezo Hong and producer Monique Verdin.

Indian Santa is the story of Thomas Dardar, Chief of the United Houma Nation, who teams up with Toys for Tots to deliver toys to needy Houma children in his pick-up sleigh, and becomes “Indian Santa.”

My Louisiana Love is the portrayal of Monique Verdin’s personal journey after she returns to her family in southeast Louisiana and recognizes that the traditional way of life of the Houma people is being threatened. Verdin documents and shares the changes she sees as the fragile wetlands in which the Houma people have traditionally hunted, fished, and trapped is jeopordized by a century-old cycle of manmade environmental crises.

At the Movies: Louisian Stories is presented by the National Museum of the American Indian Film and Video Center in cooperation with Riverkeeper, and is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.
