Riverkeeper and our science partners from Lamont Doherty and Queens College sampled the affected area from the Tappan Zee Bridge to the Battery again on Monday, 7/25. We used the same grid sampling pattern that was used previously to determine the sewage impacts on the Manhattan shoreline as well as mid-channel and on the New Jersey side of the River.

Since 5:15 p.m. yesterday, the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant, at 135th Street in New York City, began discharging untreated sewage into the Hudson River following a four alarm fire that caused severe damage and the shutdown of the plant. A failing high-pressure sewer line in Tarrytown is responsible for dumping an estimated
19.5 million gallons of partially treated sewage into the Hudson River this year. The county owned pipe, which carries sewage from Tarrytown to the wastewater treatment plant in Yonkers, broke in March, releasing 15.1 million gallons of sewage, and again in October, releasing 4.4 million gallons.

Riverkeeper has launched an updated version of its Water Quality Testing Online Database featuring a new and improved design for reviewing water quality data using Google Maps. Riverkeeper’s Water Quality Testing Program is the only program that regularly tests for sewage contamination levels as well as other water quality indicators throughout the Hudson River Estuary and posts the data online within days of sampling. The first Hudson River sampling results for the 2010 season will be posted on Friday, May 28. New results will be posted monthly through November.
