Enterococcus (“Entero”) is a fecal indicating bacterium that lives in the intestines of humans and other warm-blooded animals. It is the EPA preferred indicator for sewage contamination.

About this location:

Upstream of this site, the land use immediately adjacent to the river is mixed residential, commercial and forest, compared to downstream of here, where the Pocantico flows largely through parkland. Subtributaries that drain the Hardscrabble Wilderness area and that flow along the Taconic State Parkway enter the Pocantico from the east just upstream of this site.
