Enterococcus (“Entero”) is a fecal indicating bacterium that lives in the intestines of humans and other warm-blooded animals. It is the EPA preferred indicator for sewage contamination.

About this location:

This site is located at the northern edge of the Black Dirt agricultural region, a floodplain with rich, alluvial soils. For approximately five miles upstream of this sampling site, the Wallkill River is artificially straightened and its watershed is drained by manmade canals.
